Adriaen Brouwer Master of Emotions

Exhibition and art project from the 15th of September 2018 to the 16th of December 2018

The Museum of Oudenaarde (MOU) and the Flemish Ardennes is organising a prestigious exhibition devoted to the life and work of the 17th century Oudenaarde painter Adriaen Brouwer (1604 Oudenaarde – 1638 Antwerp). It is the first time that a large number of famous Brouwer works will be united.

Exhibition

Adriaen Brouwer was born in Oudenaarde in ca 1604, the son of an Oudenaarde tapestry cardboard artist. From an art historical point of view this oeuvre is extremely important. As a transitional figure, he bridges the 16th century Bruegel tradition and the landscape and genre scenes of the next century.

Despite being famous in his own time, today, Adriaen Brouwer (still) does not enjoy the prominence of contemporaries such as Rubens or Van Dyck. Nevertheless, he was extremely talented and his work was highly prized. His contemporaries Rubens and Rembrandt were fervent collectors of his work. The accessibility and layering of Brouwer's work make him one of the most fascinating artists of the Low Countries.

Brouwer is part of the cultural identity of Oudenaarde: local legends about his life and his name can be found in various products and events.

This exhibition offers the public the unique opportunity to discover the versatility, high artistic quality and innovative character of Brouwer's art.
