Zwartzuster Convent

Placed neatly on the corner of Pamele Square, is the Zwartzuster (Black Sisters, referring to the color of their garments) Convent, a monumental building dating back to the 13th century. The nuns of the Augustinian Order ran this place as a hub of health care and education. Since 1968, only the small window frames remind us of the modest nunnery. The city has big plans for this site. The walled garden will have a new future as a green city park. You’ll have to come back one day and see if we stuck to our plans!
