Saint Walburga Church

Saint Walburga Church in Oudenaarde

This collegiate church with its impressive tower dominates the town.
The choir in Tournai limestone is all that is left of the early-Gothic church of which construction started in the first half of the 12th century.
In the 15th century it was decided to rebuild the church in the Brabantine Gothic style but only the tower and the lower church were finished. In 1534 all construction works were stopped. The result is a marvellous mixture of both Gothic styles.
The medieval interior suffered severely from the religious riots in 1566. The present interior is baroque and late-baroque. The church has a lot of sculptures, polychrome statues, paintings and tapestries and also houses a carillon.

 Must!

Sit down for a drink during the summer months and enjoy the carillon music. The 49 bells hang in the tower of Saint Walburga church.
The carillon concerts are on Sundays from 12 pm till 13 pm, during the summer months July and August also on Thursday evenings from 8.30 pm till 9.30 pm.
