Maagdendale Abbey
The abbey was founded in 1234 but all that remains of the huge complex of buildings is a 13th-century abbey church and a 17th-century Abbess’ House (1663-1664) with an L-shaped wing and a gatehouse (1621).
The abbey was badly damaged by French bombardment in 1684 and during the French Revolution.
The buildings have now been put to new use, housing the Municipal Archives and the Royal Academy of Art.
Abbey church
The 13th-century church was built in accordance with the concept of the Cistercian order, with Scheldt gothic influences. There were originally two aisles alongside the nave, but they were demolished in 1745. The interior has fine tracery vaulting and stellar vaulting.
Abbess’ House
This is the only remaining monastery building in the traditional brick and sandstone style. The interior has a fine cloister and a monumental 17th-century oak staircase.
