House de Lalaing
Restoration workshop
![]() |
House de Lalaing accommodates the restoration workshop, where you can witness the entire conservation and restoration process of the historical tapestries. It also houses the VASA workshop, where modern tapestries are woven using the traditional technique. Pictures in the educational room show the restoration process. This year also 25 tapestries from the 16th, 17th and 18th century (which are normally housed in the Town Hall) are exhibited in the House de Lalaing. The house owes its name to Philips de Lalaing, who was the city’s governor in the 16th century and is said to be the birthplace of the illegitimate daughter of emperor Charles the Fifth: Margaret of Parma. |
The stately residence’s façade and interior were adapted to the rococo style in the 18th century. The large and walled garden with an ancient Ginkgo biloba tree is very inviting to go for a walk.
