Silver Collection De Boever-Alligoridès
Oudenaarde is always referred to as the centre of tapestries, but simultaneously with the tapestry industry, the silversmith’s trade flourished as well. Oudenaarde was a small silversmith’s centre but the objects made were of high quality.
The former chapel of the town hall now houses a collection of religious silver such as monstrances, prayer books, holy-water fonts and altar candleholders. These objects show the outstanding quality of the silver made in Oudenaarde. This wonderful collection of profane silver is a loan of the De Boever – Alligoridès family and of various local church-fabrics. In the former custodian’s room you can admire an 18th century gallery.
The true treasury of the town hall is is the outstanding 16th, 17th and 18th century silver collection 'De Boever- Alligoridès" . Most of the objects date from the Golden Age. The large number of drinking cups is amazing.
The collection represents the greatest silversmiths: Paul de Lamerie (who was the gold- and silversmith of the English king) (GB), Adam van Vianen (member of an important Dutch silversmith family) (NL) and Geeraert de Rasier (Antwerp, B).
