Restoration workshop

the restauration-workshop in House de Lalaing, Oudenaarde

restauration of a tapestry

House de Lalaing houses the restoration workshop, where you can follow the entire conservation and restoration process of the historical tapestries. It also houses the VASA workshop, where modern tapestries are woven using the traditional technique. Pictures in the educational room show the restoration process.
The house owes its name to Philips de Lalaing, who was the city’s governor in the 16th century. The house is said to be the birthplace of the illegitimate daughter of emperor Charles the Fifth: Margaret of Parma. The stately town mansion has an 18th-century rococo façade and the salons are also decorated in that style. The house has a beautiful garden featuring an old ginkgo biloba tree, also known as the Maidenhair Tree.
